Nigeria’s star striker, Victor Osimhen, has declared his readiness to guide Galatasaray to new success in the UEFA Champions League. The 26-year-old forward insists, “It’s time to make a statement in the most prestigious games.” The move marks his return to Europe’s elite competition following standout stints with Lille and Napoli. Osimhen, who quickly became a fan favorite, made his move to the Turkish giants permanent this summer after a successful loan in the 2024/25 season.
In an interview with UEFA, the Super Eagles forward said he discussed his ambition with the club president: “We agreed that we want to make a statement in the Champions League.” Osimhen added, “We’ve dominated the Turkish league for years, but now we want to show that we can compete among the best in Europe.”
Osimhen’s high ambition is a clear reflection of his relentless spirit, which characterized his remarkable journey from humble beginnings in Olusosun, Lagos, to becoming one of the world’s top footballers. “I came from a very poor background. Olusosun shaped me. It taught me resilience,” Osimhen recalled. He expressed his commitment to giving back, adding, “Whenever I go home, I visit to show gratitude and remind young kids that if I could make it out of there, they can too.”
Osimhen described the intense fan support he experienced upon arrival, saying, “When I arrived in Istanbul, I had never seen anything like that before — thousands of fans at the airport at 3 am.” He noted this deep connection fuels his commitment: “It gives you that fire to give everything for the badge. I absolutely love this club and I’m ready to go through everything with them—the good, the bad, and the ugly.”
The Nigerian star’s path is already mirroring that of his idol, Didier Drogba, who also excelled at Galatasaray before becoming a Champions League legend. Osimhen explained his admiration: “In football, my hero was Drogba. I watched him and learned from how he played and lived. I tried to add his qualities to my own game.” He cited his brother as his greatest life inspiration, who “taught me how to hustle and never give up.”
With the club striving for continental recognition, Osimhen believes Galatasaray’s resurgence can restore pride to Turkish football, declaring, “We are the biggest club in Turkey, and one of the biggest in the world. Now, we want to prove it in the Champions League.”
