Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, has been cleared to run in the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential primary ahead of the 2027 general election.

The Chairman of the NDC National Screening Committee, Sam Egwu, announced the decision on Wednesday via a video posted to the party’s official X account. The screening took place in Abuja on Tuesday, with Egwu confirming that the committee found Obi fully qualified under all constitutional and statutory guidelines.

Egwu stated that the committee’s certification followed a thorough evaluation proving Obi had met all eligibility criteria outlined in the party rules, the Electoral Act, and the 1999 Constitution (as amended). Having answered all panel questions satisfactorily, Obi received the green light to contest the NDC presidential primary on a date yet to be determined. Sharing his experience on X on Wednesday, the former governor revealed that the screening process exceeded two and a half hours, centering on a strict review of his credentials and his strategic vision for Nigeria.

Reflecting on the exercise, Obi noted that the panel dedicated more than two and a half hours to examining his credentials, which included his degree certificates, NYSC discharge papers, and statutory declarations of age.

He further engaged the committee on his blueprint for national transformation and the critical leadership model Nigeria currently demands. Upon successful clearance, he was presented with his presidential nomination form. Expressing gratitude to the committee chairman, former Governor Sam Egwu, and the party’s executive body, Obi lauded the transparency and democratic integrity of the process.

This screening occurs against the backdrop of strategic political realignments, with opposition factions intensifying coalition talks and internal party preparations for the 2027 polls.
