Professor Awodun Advocates Simplified Science Teaching to Drive Socio-Economic Growth.

Prof. Adebisi Awodun, a Professor of Physics Education at the Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology (BOUESTI), has called for a major shift in how science and technology are taught in schools. Delivering an inaugural lecture titled “Refocusing Physics pedagogies: Blueprint to potent corollaries,” Awodun argued that simplifying these subjects is essential to boosting student performance. He emphasized that “the development of any nation can often be measured by its advancement in science and technology,” adding that no country can achieve socio-economic progress while neglecting science education.

Prof. Awodun highlighted that Physics is the most vital basic science for technology-driven professions, including health, agriculture, water, energy, and IT. He noted that the subject provides the essential tools to understand the world, contributing significantly to both personal development and national growth. According to the professor, Physics has vast practical applications in fields ranging from engineering and medicine to anatomy.

Prof. Awodun argued that traditional classroom instruction has proven less effective than outdoor teaching in improving student performance in Physics. He urged that the current “conventional” methods be either significantly modified or replaced entirely with activity-based approaches. To support this shift, he called on the government to enact policies and legislation—similar to those in California—to facilitate the adoption of outdoor education across secondary schools nationwide.
