On Tuesday, November 11, the Department of State Services (DSS) filed a six-count criminal charge against 27-year-old Innocent Onukwume before the Federal High Court in Abuja. The charges stem from Onukwume’s alleged advocacy for a coup d’état in the country, an offense the security agent claims occurred in October of this year. According to the court document (FHC/ABJ/CR/610/2025), filed by DSS lawyer A. M. Danalami, Onukwume is identified as residing at Umusayo Layout, Oyigbo LGA, Rivers State.
The DSS asserted that Innocent Onukwume’s actions constitute offenses contrary to and punishable under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2024 (As Amended). Onukwume, who is the sole defendant in the charge, is expected to be arraigned within the week.
In Count One, Onukwume is alleged to have posted a message on his social media account in October 2025 that called for a coup in Nigeria. This action was allegedly taken with the intent to cause fear, alarm, or disturb public peace.
The alleged offense, among other counts, is said to be punishable under Section 59 (1) of the Criminal Code Act, Cap 77, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
