FG Confirms Release of Super Eagles’ AFCON Bonuses Ahead of Algeria Clash

The tension in the Super Eagles camp is finally cooling down, but it wasn’t because of the Morocco weather! After a high-stakes standoff over unpaid money, it looks like our boys are finally getting their dues.

The “No Pay, No Play” Standoff 😤 On Wednesday, reports went viral that the Super Eagles were ready to “sit at home.” The team reportedly threatened to boycott their travel to Marrakesh for the Quarter-final clash against Algeria. The reason? They hadn’t seen their match bonuses for the entire tournament. With a five-hour road trip from Fez ahead of them, the players made it clear: pay us before we move.

Government to the Rescue 🏦 To stop a total national embarrassment, the Federal Government moved fast. On Thursday, the Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite, announced that the funds have cleared all “regulatory hurdles.”

The Federal Government has confirmed that the Super Eagles’ match bonuses for the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) are currently being processed. On Thursday, the Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite, stated that the payments have cleared all regulatory requirements and are expected to reflect in the players’ domiciliary accounts by Friday at the latest.

This announcement follows a tense situation on Wednesday, where the team reportedly threatened to boycott their travel to Marrakesh for their quarter-final match against Algeria. The players, who have yet to receive bonuses for any of their four matches in the tournament, were prepared to miss the trip unless their outstanding allowances were settled.

Minister Uzoka-Anite attributed the delay to the complex “conversion process” needed to move funds into foreign currency, which the players prefer. This incident mirrors a similar standoff in November 2024, when a training boycott over unpaid allowances preceded a loss to DR Congo, which ended Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualification hopes.

With the financial issues now being addressed, the Super Eagles are scheduled to travel five hours from their base in Fez to Marrakesh today to prepare for Saturday’s high-stakes clash against the Desert Foxes.

The Super Eagles head into their quarter-final as the most dominant side in the competition, having won all four of their matches so far. With 12 goals scored, Nigeria is the tournament’s highest-scoring team—a tally boosted by their recent 4–0 thrashing of Mozambique in the second round after finishing at the top of Group C.

The stakes for Saturday’s clash are high: the winner of the Nigeria vs. Algeria match will move on to the semi-finals to face either the tournament hosts, Morocco, or the five-time champions, Cameroon.
