Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has urged young legal practitioners to anchor their careers in integrity and technical skill to stay ahead in an evolving professional landscape.
While addressing the NBA Young Lawyers Forum (Maiduguri Branch Summit), Osigwe emphasized that professional relevance is impossible without a commitment to constant improvement. The summit, titled “Empowering the Next Generation of Lawyers: Building Competence, Resilience, and Relevance,” served as a platform for the President to issue a strong call to action for the nation’s rising legal talent.
In a statement released via the NBA’s official X handle on Thursday, Osigwe reiterated the association’s firm stance: a lawyer’s ability to serve the public and the court is directly tied to their level of expertise and moral standing.
Osigwe clarified that for a lawyer, competence is a mandatory professional duty, not an optional trait, as dictated by the Rules of Professional Conduct. He argued that expertise is the primary driver of client trust and judicial respect, serving as the only way to remain relevant in a modern, highly specialized legal market.
He further noted that long-term success depends on a lawyer’s commitment to lifelong learning and adaptability. According to the NBA President, resilience—the ability to withstand economic and systemic pressures—is forged through a combination of sharpened skills and unwavering ethical standards. He concluded by highlighting Continuous Professional Development (CPD) as the most critical tool for preparing young lawyers for future leadership and professional excellence.
Osigwe expressed optimism that the summit’s dialogues and activities would play a vital role in producing a future generation of lawyers who are skilled, persistent, and perfectly aligned with the evolving needs of the Nigerian legal profession.
