Renowned gospel musician Bunmi Akinnaanu, widely celebrated for her iconic hit “Omije Ojumi,” has passed away.
Her death was confirmed on Tuesday through an official family statement released on Instagram by her colleague and fellow artist, Ayo Melody. The announcement was paired with a photograph of the singer and a brief video clip, disclosing that she breathed her last at a hospital in Lagos on January 12, 2026.
The family’s statement expressed profound grief, saying: “With great sadness, we announce the passing of Evangelist Olubunmi Akinnaanu Adeoye (OMIJE OJUMI), who passed away on 12th January, 2026, at a Lagos hospital, Nigeria. May God grant her eternal rest.”
The official family announcement was issued and signed by Olawale Akinnaanu.
While the family has not provided a specific cause of death, the singer’s health had been a subject of public concern in the months leading up to her passing. In late 2025, she had openly requested spiritual support regarding a severe leg ailment.
This was highlighted in a widely circulated video from October 2025, recorded during a service at G.F. David Ministries in Ibadan. The footage showed the gospel artist seated with her leg elevated on a chair as a minister offered fervent prayers for her recovery, noting at the time that she was struggling with persistent bleeding in the affected limb.
During the prayer session, the presiding minister spoke of chronic bleeding in her leg, characterizing the ailment as a “spiritual attack” or an “arrow” directed at her. Despite these previous struggles, there has been no official confirmation that this specific condition was the cause of her passing.
Akinnaanu’s musical journey began in her youth, but she initially established herself in the professional world, spending roughly a decade in the banking sector. Driven by her passion for ministry, she eventually resigned from her corporate role to commit to gospel music full-time. She achieved nationwide fame with the release of her signature anthem, “Omije Ojumi,” a song that became a mainstay in Christian households and worship services across Nigeria. Her successful career also produced several other beloved tracks and albums, including the popular hit “O Ti Sure.”
