Following the Super Eagles’ 4-1 extra-time victory over Gabon in the 2026 World Cup playoff semi-final, former midfielder Sunday Oliseh singled out Benjamin Fredrick for praise. Oliseh took to X on Friday to describe Fredrick as the “most influential player” for Nigeria, highlighting his exceptional positioning, pace, decisiveness, and simple, effective style.
The match saw Akor Adams open the scoring before Gabon equalized; in extra time, goals from Chidera Ejuke and a brace from Victor Osimhen sealed the win. Fredrick, playing alongside Calvin Bassey, was key to a solid defense that effectively neutralized Gabon’s attacking threats.

Oliseh added a touch of humor to his celebratory mood, writing, “Boy it feels great in the morning when Naija do well sha! Abi I lie? Have a nice day everyone.” The veteran midfielder’s timely praise comes as Nigeria now prepares for the next crucial match on November 16. The Super Eagles will face the winner of the Cameroon versus DR Congo playoff tie, with the winner of that fixture earning a spot in the inter-continental playoff for a chance to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Benjamin Fredrick’s career began in Nigeria at the Simoiben Academy in Kaduna, followed by stints with ABS FC and Nasarawa United before his move abroad. In 2023, the 20-year-old was signed by English club Brentford FC and subsequently loaned to Belgian side K.F.C. Dender E.H. to gain crucial first-team experience.
Primarily a center-back, Fredrick is noted for his versatility, capable of also operating as a right-back or defensive midfielder. His rapid progression saw him transition from the Nigeria’s Under-20 team to the senior Super Eagles squad in May 2025, following standout performances at the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
