Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, recently announced during a media engagement that the police will not turn away criminals who are willing to renounce violence and embrace peace. However, the police chief clarified that accepting these peace overtures does not mean easing pressure on criminal networks.
Inspector General Egbetokun affirmed that the police will be receptive to those wishing to reform: “Criminals who want to embrace peace, we will not shut the doors to them. If they want to surrender, they are welcome.” However, he immediately tempered this by clarifying that “that does not mean we are going to relax our onslaught on them.”
Inspector General Egbetokun also addressed the rising number of attacks on police officers, issuing a firm warning that such incidents are unacceptable. He urged Nigerians to avoid confronting officers on duty, even during disagreements, emphasizing that all misconduct should instead be reported through the proper official channels.
Inspector General Egbetokun reiterated his firm warning against assaults on officers: “I have repeatedly warned against attacking police officers on lawful duties.” He insisted that if citizens disagree with an officer’s conduct, they must “do not attack that policeman. Report his conduct to his superiors.”
