Nigerian Afrobeat star Yemi Alade shared a difficult personal experience, revealing that lying about her age for years led her into a period of depression.
In an interview with Chude Jideonwo, the singer disclosed that she spent three consecutive years falsely claiming to be 22, before realising she had actually turned 25.
Yemi Alade stated that the moment of realisation was profoundly shaking, as she initially struggled to accept her true age. She recounted the details: “There was a time someone asked me how old I was, and for about three years I kept saying 22. Then one day I calculated it and realised I was already 25.” Yemi admitted that this sudden discovery seriously “messed with her head.”
Yemi Alade described the mental fallout, stating, “I was depressed for a few days because my mind couldn’t process it.”
The most shocking part, she added, was the realization that “for three years, I didn’t know my age.” Alade called the incident one of the strangest phases of her life, saying it ultimately taught her a difficult but necessary lesson about honesty and self-awareness.
